Missouri River Guided Fly Fishing Trips

Channel Outfitters has been offering guided fly fishing trips throughout Montana since 1998. After bouncing around on most rivers in western Montana we have narrowed it down to Montana's Missouri River where fly fishing is simply the best!

The Missouri River fly fishing season starts in April, when the streamer bite kicks things off, through November, if the weather holds. Early and late season on the Mo' might be chilly, but regardless, the brown and rainbow trout are still actively feeding. June is prime time, as that is the start of the dry fly fishing. PMDs and Caddis make their appearance, and large surface-feeding brown and rainbow trout can be targeted for prime dry fly fishing. The action continues into July and August, with terrestrials joining the menu. Streamer fishing can be effective spring, summer and fall, when the conditions are favorable. And nymph fishing is always good!

Typical gratuities are $150–$220 per boat per day

All trips require a 50% deposit at time of booking

Montana fishing licenses are not included.

Missouri River Lodging & Transportation

Holly Channel can assist with all the logistics for your Missouri River trip – which airports to use, help find lodging, transportation, recommend dining options, and suggest where to buy groceries. She's also spent her fair share of fly fishing on the Missouri River so she can answer all your fly fishing questions as you prepare for your trip.

Cancellation Policy

We follow the same policy as most outfitters and guides in Montana:

  • Cancel with 30-days or more notice, we refund full deposit.
  • Cancel within 30 days, you forfeit all deposits. If we are able to re-book the guide, we will refund the deposit or apply it to a trip at a later date.
  • Cancel with less than 72 hours notice, we charge the full price of the trip.

Missouri River Weather

We guide in all weather and water conditions that we deem safe. That means inclement weather, poor water levels or undesirable fishing conditions are NOT acceptable reasons to cancel or receive a refund. Trips cancelled by the guide or mutual guide/client decision due to unsafe weather or water conditions, state or federal closures, or other uncontrollable circumstances will have the entire deposit refunded.

What to Expect

You've booked your trip. You have a guide. You have lodging. You have transportation. Now what?

If you've done this before, you probably already know what to expect, but a refresher never hurts.

If you're a first-timer, congratulations. Life as you know it will never be the same. Here are a few must-have items to bring on your fly fishing adventure:

  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Brimmed hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Water shoes or sandals
  • Bring appropriate clothing. Plan on cool mornings, warm to hot afternoons, and keep in mind, weather in the mountains can be very unpredictable.
  • BYO alcohol, if you like.

At Channel Outfitters, we like to beat all of the guide traffic by getting on the river early. The river is quiet, wildlife is active and you'll be the first anglers to show your fly to the fish.
