Many hunters are starting to realize that although Montana is known for outstanding mule deer hunting, it also has some very impressive whitetail deer. Some of our hunters come out for mule deer but go home with a nice whitetail buck instead. We have good whitetail populations on almost all of the ranches we hunt. These deer are found on the creek bottoms and hay fields but can be anywhere during the rut which peaks in November. Montana's deer tag can be used for mule deer or whitetail, so sometimes it pays to keep an open mind. Montana is one of the few states that has a rifle season right through the rut. The late season rut hunt can be the hunt you don't want to miss.
